Noun : Number
Read these words :
• one girl – two girls • one branch – two branches
We can count these nouns as one or more than one in number. Nouns that can
be counted are called countable nouns.
Now look at these words :
• water • milk
We do not say 'two waters' or ‘two milks’. Nouns that cannot be counted are
called uncountable nouns.
A. Tick ( ) the countable nouns and cross ( ) the uncountable nouns.

Nouns that are one in number are called singular nouns. Nouns that are more
than one in number are called plural nouns.
v We add–s to most singular nouns to make them plural nouns. For example,
car – cars tree – trees
v We add –es to singular nouns ending in –s, –ch, –x and –sh to make them
plural nouns. For example,
witch – witches box – boxes
v If a singular noun ends in –y :
If a vowel is before –y, add –s. For example, toy – toys
If there is a consonant before –y, remove –y and add –ies. For example,
city – cities
