When we compare two or more things, we use adjectives of comparison.
We add -er or -est to the adjectives when we compare two or more people,
animals or things.

When we use an adjective ending in –er, we should also use the word than.
A. Look at these pairs of sentences. Underline the adjective in the first sentence.
Then fill in the blank with the –er form of the adjective. One has been done
for you.
1. I am tall. My brother is taller than I am. (tall/taller)
2. My pencil is long. Your pencil is than mine. (long/longer)
3. This soup is hot. This tea is than the soup. (hot/hotter)
4. Our house is large. My grandparents’ house is than our
house. (large/larger)
5. Our pet dog is quiet. Our pet rabbit is than him.
(quiet/quieter)
B. Let’s play a game. Look at this picture. Turn to your partner and take turns
to ask each other questions using words like tall, small, big, close, far, safe,
long and short.
