Scene 1
(The shoemaker and his wife are in their small kitchen. They are eating
a simple dinner of dry bread and soup. They are poor but
look happy).
Boris : Eva, the soup was so tasty.
Eva : You work so hard. I wanted to make a nice pudding for
you, but our larder is empty.
Boris : Never mind, Eva. We may be poor, but we are honest. At
least we have no trouble buying food for two meals a day.
Eva : Yes, I know. (smiles lightly). It is silly of me to worry.
Boris : Let’s go to bed now. It is quite late.
(The shoemaker and his wife leave the kitchen).
