Subject-verb Agreement
Subject-verb agreement means that the subject and the verb in a sentence must match in
number. This means if the subject is singular, the verb must be singular. If the subject is plural ,
the verb must be plural.
1. Singular Subject
A singular subject is a noun that refers to one person, place, thing, or idea.
The verb that follows a singular subject must also be singular.
Examples:
• The girl (singular subject) sleeps (singular verb) on the bed.
• The teacher (singular subject) explains (singular verb) the lesson clearly.
2. Plural Subject
A plural subject is a noun that refers to more than one person, place, thing, or idea.
The verb that follows a plural subject must also be plural.
Examples:
• The boys (plural subject) play (plural verb) in the park every afternoon.
• The dogs (plural subject) bark (plural verb) loudly at strangers.
