Clauses
A sentence is made up of phrases and clauses. A clause is a group of words comprising a subject
and a finite verb.
Main Clause: The clause which has the main verb of the sentence is the principal or the main
clause.
Example: She finished her homework before dinner.
The main clause is: ‘‘She finished her homework.’’
Subordinate Clause: This clause is introduced by a conjunction or a relative pronoun and cannot
stand alone as a complete sentence. It depends on the main clause to complete its meaning.
Example: Because it was raining, we stayed indoors.
The subordinate clause is: ‘‘Because it was raining.’’
Coordinating Clause: When two clauses of equal importance are joined by a coordinating
conjunction, they are called coordinating clauses.
Example: I wanted to go to the park, but it was too cold outside.
The coordinating clauses are: ‘‘I wanted to go to the park’’ and ‘‘it was too cold outside.’’
A. Underline the Main Clause in the following sentences.
