Krishna Deva Raya asked the pandit, ‘‘Is it all right?’’
The pandit agreed. The pandit was taken into the palace and was given
a big room to rest for that night. He was offered a sumptuous meal. The
pandit ate to his content and prepared to sleep. As it was summer time,
he took off his shirt and lay in the bed. He was very tired, so he soon fell
asleep.
When it was about midnight, Tenali Rama decided to pay a visit to the
pandit. On his way, he picked up a thorny branch of a bush. Silently, he
appeared by the side of the bed and pricked the stomach of the pandit.
The pandit woke up with a start and shouted, ‘‘Evudura Adi.’’ It meant—
‘who is it’ in Telugu. This was enough for Tenali Rama.
Next day, Tenali Rama surprised all the courtiers by announcing the mother
tongue of the pandit. The pandit was astonished. He knew what had
happened the night before. But he did not speak a word and left the court
in anger. Krishna Deva Raya was pleased at Tenali's wisdom and suitably
rewarded him.
