Diwali is a festival of lights. We decorate our houses and
burn firecrackers on Diwali. These firecrackers create a lot of
pollution and destroy our environment.
Ruchi lives with her family in a village close to a small town. Her family
enjoys the clean, quiet surroundings.
One day, she received a letter from Uncle Karanpal, his father’s brother.
‘‘Come and spend your Diwall holidays with us,’’ she wrote. ‘‘I’ll take you
to see many things.’’
Ruchi was excited. She had heard
that Delhi was a very big city. It
had lots of cars and big buses
on the streets. The streets were
very broad, not like the narrow
ones she saw in the town near
his village. The houses, too, were
big in Delhi. There were also
many tall buildings in the city.
‘‘Will we go by train, Papa?’’
Ruchi asked her father. ‘‘Yes, we
will. Delhi is far away. It will take
a few hours to reach there;’’ her
father said.
