Later in the evening, everyone started bursting crackers. Whiz, wheee,
crack, booooom went the crackers. There was so much noise! Everyone
covered their ears with their hands. The air was filled with smoke, and the
crackers did not smell nice.
Next morning, Ruchi excitedly called her father. ‘‘Look, Papa,’’ she said,
pointing to the street, ‘‘It looks like a black carpet.’’
‘‘Yes, it does,’’ said her father. Her father pointed to some dogs roaming
about the street. ‘‘Those crackers frightened them yesterday. They are
happy now,’’ he said. Ruchi looked at the dogs and smiled.
A few days later, Ruchi was back home. At night, as she lay in bed, she
thought about the Diwali celebrations in Delhi.
‘There was so much smoke and noise that night. Even the animals were
scared. The noise and the smoke hurt us too. But what can we do?’ thought
Ruchi.
‘I know! Next year, we can celebrate a cracker-free Diwali. I’ll tell my friends
and family about this,’ thought Ruchi happily.
