13 Golu : A Dolls’ Festival

Golu is a festival of dolls celebrated in Tamil Nadu. Festivals are special
occasions. On festival days, we do things that make us happy. We all celebrate
different festivals. In India, some festivals are celebrated particularly in
a region or state. Likewise in Tamil Nadu we celebrate Golu festival. It is
a festival of dolls. It is a part of the ten-day Navaratri celebrations when
people worship Goddess Durga. Young girls and women arrange dolls on a
large stand that looks like a flight of steps. These are usually dolls of Gods,
Goddesses, people and animals. The doll stand always has an odd number
of steps, like three, five, seven or nine.
