All the people of the bustee gathered under a big mango tree. They said to
one another, "We don’t know who we are, we don’t know our names. Let’s
give ourselves names.’’ So
they named each other
some names.
Then also decided who
would live in which house.
Even the children came
together under a huge
mango tree. They wanted
to play. But they did not know what to play and how to play.
Narayan and Grandma saw all this through the window of their house.
Narayan went to the group of children and said that he could teach them
how to play tops. He played the tops several times to teach them. He worked
on his spin and soon there was top after top spinning on his palms! Small
children kept following Narayan. They would keep calling him for help. He
was delighted. Other children learnt cricket and football from Narayan.
A few days passed. Late in the night, when Narayan and the whole bustee
were fast asleep, grandma held the top close to her lips and said something.
In the midnight she spun, the top on the cricket ground, she spun it on
the football ground and she also spun it on all the houses and trees of the
bustee.
The next day, all the people woke up with a fresh memory. They remembered
their names, their houses, their friends and games.
They all had a meeting under an enormous Mango tree. Everyone said that
they would continue to live as they were living.
Days and months passed. The top is still spinning in a far-away bustee where
all the children are playing happily.
