Tell me how?

In what way does an escalator work ?

An escalator is a conveyor transport device for transporting people,
consisting of a staircase whose steps move up or down on tracks while
keeping the surfaces of the individual steps horizontal.
As a power-driven, continuous moving stairway designed to transport
passengers up and down short vertical distances, escalators are used
around the world to move pedestrian traffic in places where elevators
would be impractical. Principal areas of usage include shopping centers,
airports, transit systems, trade centers, hotels, and public buildings.
The escalator will carry you upwards or downwards, if you will just
stand on it’s step. As each step reaches the end of its run it folds inwards
and moves back to the escalator’s starting point.

                                                                                                         Step

When the step reaches Inner rail
            the starting point the
            following roller rail Chain guide
            makes contact with the
            driving roller rail. This
sets the step to a certain
            height. Return wheel

The chain guide is attached to the gear to move step.
When the step is at the end of its run the following roller rail and the driving roller rail no longer touch
each other, and the step flattens out.
