               41               History of Architecture




                   UNESCO has designated various wonders around
                   the world as part of its  World Heritage Sites
                   program.  These  sites  are  recognized  for  their   1
                   outstanding cultural or natural significance. Here
                   are some notable UNESCO-designated wonders:




                                                                     An  ancient  Incan  city  located  high  in  the
                                                                     Andes Mountains, known for its archaeological
                2                                                    significance and stunning location.








            An  archaeological  site  famous  for  its  rock-
            cut  architecture  and  water  conduit  system,           3
            including the iconic Treasury.




                                                                     A large pre-Columbian archaeological site built
                                                                     by the Maya civilization, known for its pyramid,
                                                                     El Castillo.

            An ancient Roman amphitheater in Rome known
            for  its  massive  size  and  historical  gladiatorial
            combats.

                                                                     A prehistoric monument consisting of a ring of
                                                                     standing stones, whose purpose and construction
                                                                     are still subjects of research and debate.

                                                             both architecturally and religiously.
