P. 17
One day, some soldiers heard Pythias speaking against the king.
Soldier 1: You there! How dare you speak badly about our king? What’s
your name?
Pythias: (boldly) My name is Pythias, and I speak the truth.
Soldier 2: Arrest him and take him to the king.
Narrator: Pythias was brought before the King Dionysius. He stood
there boldly and showed no fear at all.
Dionysius: My soldiers told me that you do not like my laws. Is that
true?
Pythias: Nobody in this country likes your laws, but they are afraid to
speak the truth.
Dionysius: (angrily) Do you expect me to believe that you are the only
person in this city who is not afraid?
Pythias: I don’t know about that, Your Majesty. What I do know is
that I speak the truth.
Dionysius: Soldiers! Throw this man into the prison at once! He think he
can tell me how to rule my country. Ha! Ha! Ha! When the
sun rises on the tenth day from today, this man will be
hanged. Let this be a lesson for anyone who tries to tell me
how to rule!
Narrator: Damon went to see his friend in prison and speaks to him.
Damon: My dear Pythias! I am sad to see you like this. How can I
help you? How can I get you out of here?
