2 Birbal’s Khichri

Birbal is the wise minister in the Emperor Akbar’s court. He
teaches a lesson on the importance of keeping a promise in
this witty story.
Once, on a cold winter day Emperor Akbar and Birbal were taking a walk
along the lake. Suddenly, a thought came to Birbal and he shared it with
the Emperor. ‘‘Sir, a man would do anything for money. Do you agree with
me?’’ Birbal said.
Akbar put his finger into the lake and then immediately removed it because
the water was very cold. Akbar said, ‘‘Of course not. I don’t think a man
would spend an entire night in the cold water of this lake for money.’’ Birbal
smiled and replied, ‘‘I am sure I can find such a person.’’
Akbar challenged Birbal to find such a person. ‘‘I will reward that person
witty — intelligent and humorous; challenged — a call to take part in competition
