Akbar said to Birbal, ‘‘How can the khichri get cooked if it is so far away

from the fire?’’
Birbal answered, ‘‘The same way the poor man received warm heat from a

street lamp that was more than five hundred metres away.’’

Akbar understood his mistake. He laughed loudly and told his messenger,
‘‘Send for that poor man.’’

When the poor man came, Akbar gave him the reward that he had promised.
