5 Mother’s Day

Have you ever given a gift to your mother on a Mother’s Day?
If not, what kind of gift would you like to give her?
Somya was on her way home from school. She was excited and tomorrow
at last was Mother’s Day. Somya had been planning for this day for weeks.
Since she did not get any pocket money, she could not buy a card for her
mother. Instead, she had made one herself. She had spent two whole nights
cutting, painting and decorating it. She had made a picture of a mother
hugging a daughter and stuck it on the front. She thought her mother
would love it. Now she was looking forward to giving it to her and seeing
her reaction.
Somya sat down next to her friend, Preeti. She was about to tell her about
the card she had made for her mother when Preeti said excitedly, ‘‘Hey,
do you know it’s Mother’s Day tomorrow? I’ve got my mother a book of
poems called Ode to Mother. It cost me a lot of money. I saved for months
to get it. I’m sure my mother will love it.’’
Before Somya could react, Smriti, who was sitting just across the aisle, said,
‘‘I also saved all my pocket money to buy a gift for my mother. I’ve got her
a picture frame from Art Gallery. On the side of the frame, it's written, ‘The
best mother in the world!’ I’m going to put her photograph in that frame
and give it to her tomorrow.’’
Somya was dumbstruck. Everyone seemed to be buying good things for
aisle — a passage between rows of seats; dumbstruck — so shocked that
one cannot speak
