Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader of the civil rights movement in the United States.
He believed in peaceful protests to fight against racism and unfair treatment of Black
people.
Born: January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia
Education: He studied in college and earned a doctorate degree.
Married: Coretta Scott in 1953
In 1954, he became a pastor at a church in Montgomery, Alabama. There, he led a
bus boycott to protest unfair rules on city buses. This made him famous across the
country.
In 1957, he helped start a group called the SCLC, which used peaceful marches and
protests to fight racism.
In 1963, King led the March on Washington and gave his most famous speech:
“I Have a Dream”, in front of over 200,000 people.
This helped bring change. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed to stop segregation
and unfair treatment. King won the Nobel Peace Prize the same year.
Later, he worked to help poor people and stood up for workers’ rights.
On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was killed in Memphis, Tennessee.
