16 Corporal or bodily noises could refer to sounds Corporal
made by the human body, often involuntarily.
These noises are a natural part of bodily Noises
function, although some people may find them
embarrassing or annoying.
Sneezing
1. The sneeze reflex begins with irritation in the nasal
mucosa, which sends a signal to the brain. The brain
then triggers the contraction of the diaphragm and
abdominal muscles, causing a rapid expulsion of air.
Burping
2. As the stomach fills with air, the lower esophageal
sphincter (the muscle between the esophagus
and stomach) relaxes, allowing the air to escape
upwards through the esophagus and out of the
mouth.
Hiccups
3. The diaphragm contracts suddenly, causing a quick
intake of air. This is followed by the rapid closure of
the vocal cords, producing the characteristic sound
of a hiccup.
Rumbling Stomach (Borborigmus)
4. The noises are caused by the movement of gas
and liquid through the gastrointestinal tract,
particularly when the stomach and intestines
contract to mix and move contents.
Snoring
5. When the muscles in the throat relax during sleep,
they can partially obstruct the airway. As air flows
past these relaxed tissues, it causes them to vibrate,
creating the snoring sound.
